Lake Ohia Gum Field Project
Dept. of Conservation has recently upgrade access to a old gum field along side a rest area on the Inland Road at Tokerau Beach. This is located 2-3 km kms along the road, on the right, from the State Highway 10 turn-off junction.
Along with walkways they are mounting gum photos supplied from The Northwood Collection. These photos are typical of the area and have been laser burnt onto large stainless plates which are then mounted on steel posts. This is to give durability and to prevent theft. The project is now complete and photos of the project can viewed here...........
Shackleton's Wall Project
Just before Xmas the Melba Street wall of Shackelton's Amcal Chemist shop was painted white and a large panel with a 1.2 m high photo supplied from The Northwood Collection was mounted. More info on this project soon.
Two slideshows using photos from The Northwood Collection and The Charlie Dawes Collection were created late in 2009. They were tested on the public and results were sufficient to justify further development. During January 2010 a wide-screen version was created involving a new layout of the Northwood photos and info. During February it was tested at a Te Ahu meeting and was greatly appreciated. The wide-screen slideshow concept was further developed by creating a DVD version. This was played on ANZAC day at the Kaitaia RSA. A copy has now been given to the Switzer Residential Home for the old folk to enjoy memories. Another copy is at Home Comforts, 135 Commerce Street, Kaitaia, where it can be viewed playing on a TV set.
